I have never talked to a mental health professional. What is the process, and what is expected of me?
The counseling process is a cooperative exploration of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors between the client and counselor. A therapeutic relationship is built on mutual trust, with the counselor providing a safe environment for the client. The first session focuses on the counselor gathering detailed information from the client. The goal is for the counselor to gain a deeper understanding of the client’s presenting problem and connect with the client's individuality. Subsequent sessions may include, but are not limited to, discussing personal challenges, relationships, past experiences, transitions, and any other topics important to the client. The counselor helps the client through self-exploration while teaching skills and tools for the client to apply in everyday life.
I have had people tell me that I don’t need to seek professional help; they can help me work through my challenges. Why should I seek help from a professional?
Professional counselors possess skills that enable them to listen to clients effectively, using reflective skills that promote clients' thought processes and help them better understand a situation. Professional counselors are trained to understand the complexities of human behavior, utilizing an objective approach tailored to the unique needs of clients, which supports long-term mental health balance. You can freely express complicated feelings without being judged or feeling like you are burdening someone.
I do not like the idea of taking medication. Will I be placed on medication?
It’s completely normal to feel unsure about taking medication for mental health. Many people find healing and growth through therapy alone, and for some, medication can serve as a helpful support — especially during times when symptoms feel overwhelming or difficult to manage. We understand that there are also concerns regarding side effects, long-term use, or the stigma sometimes associated with medication. These are valid and important considerations. While our office does not prescribe medication, our goal is to support you in making informed choices. If you ever wish to explore that option, we’re here to help connect you with trusted professionals who can guide you through a thoughtful consultation.
How many counseling sessions will I need?
Each client is unique in their presenting problem, and there is no specific timeframe assigned to treat a particular mental health issue or challenge. However, the client and counselor will discuss specific goals and timeframes that align with the client. Typically, goals are reviewed and updated every 90 days with the client. Sometimes, clients only need a few sessions to address a specific topic; others may require ongoing support that can last for months or years.
I have always been someone who is independent and can handle things on my own. What can I gain from therapy?
While many people turn to therapy during times of crisis, it can also be a powerful space for building self-awareness, deepening relationships, and nurturing self-care. Your life experiences are uniquely yours — and there’s no one-size-fits-all guide for navigating life’s challenges, big or small. Counselors are trained to support individuals from diverse backgrounds, providing a safe and nonjudgmental space where you can be heard and equipped with practical tools to use in your life every day.
